Dev, I think you are correct. The Internet brought about a lot of good things.

I'm not too sure how much meeting people on line did for me as far as mentoring me, but I do take great comfort in the fact that I am not alone in my fetishes.

I'm going to throw out three role models: my dad, my sister and of course, Mrs. Mule.

My dad was a typical 1950's dad - WWII hero, construction worker, cigar smoking, Friday-nights boxing watching on the TV head of household. For all that, he loved my mom very much and treated her with respect. He valued her opinion and listened to what she had to say.

He was by no means a wuss or henpecked, he just was smart enough to appreciate a good woman.

Mom was also a role model but she was the typical (for the era) stay-at-home mom. It was easier to identify with my dad. Mom did blossom later in life after we kids left and she could stop being a mommy and concentrate on being herself.

My sister is two and a half years older than me. As older sisters go, she wasn't too bad. She did not try to boss me around. For siblings who lived in close quarters we got along rather well. Right there was training for getting along with female peers (I also had a female cousin my same age that I played with a lot).

My sister was a very active girl and would have been in constant trouble if mom and dad didn't stay one step ahead of her. From this, I got the impression that girls weren't all "sugar and spice and everything nice."

In personality, my sister takes more after my father than my mother.

I was a good kid brother. I never tattled on my sister, and as I got older, even "covered" for her. So she and her friends got complacent with my being around, even when they engaged in "girl talk" about boys. I learned a lot about how the "other half" lived by listening in on these conversations.

Then there is Mrs. Mule. She's a lot like my sister and she's a lot like her dad. She is the most "put together" person I know. If all women were like her, women would most definitely rule the world.

This leads to a problem. Mrs. Mule is so strong in dealing with problems that I think this is natural for all women. "Women's Issues?" What issues? Women can handle anything!

I really don't have a role model for BDSM. I just sort of came to it on my own.

I've found that various people online have served as partial role models for different aspects of my play or understanding as a dom. Bitchy Jones helped me frame some things mentally; Eileen has a hot play style that has influenced me; Alexis (as much as I hate to admit this) has pushed me in some helpful, hot directions; and Sex Geek is my current major brain crush as far as the philosophy of kink goes.
